What is the commonality between Parathion, Aldicarb, and Methamidophos? Could they be names of ancient Greek gods? If only that were the case…
Parathion, Aldicarb, and Methamidophos are among the most dangerous and widely used insecticides in cotton cultivation. It can lead to nausea, tremors, paralysis, and death for insects and humans.
Some of the health risks associated with pesticides are related to the individuals who work in the cultivation:
- Store pesticides in their bedrooms.
- Keep pesticides near their food.
- Reuse old pesticide containers for water.
- Wear the same clothing in cotton fields and at home.
- Contribute to pesticide contamination in neighbouring plantations and streams.
Something to Rethink
Twenty-five per cent of all insecticides are used in the cotton fields. Is there a relationship between cotton cultivation and insect death? What do you think?
