“100 million people in India do not have access to fresh drinking water, and we could cover 85% of India’s daily water needs with the water used to run the country’s cotton farms.”
– Stephen Leahy, International Environmental Journalist, The Guardian
These are just a few harsh examples of how much the textile industry costs the environment. At the top of our New Year’s promises is spreading knowledge and creating change. The best part is that there are many ways to make a difference, and we need your help – everyone can do something, but no one can do everything.
Here are some important and simple ways you can help reduce the impact on nature and the environment regarding clothing and fabric choices.
- Always choose organically produced materials. Although the impact on humans is relatively small, the effect on the environment and its ecosystems is all the more significant.
- Choose clothes made from as nature-based materials as possible, such as wool, linen, and hemp.
- Buy less! Focus less on quantity and more on quality.
- Make more and recycle through exchanges or handing into second-hand shops.
- Look for clothing with a label that guarantees controlled chemical use during manufacture (e.g. OEKO-TEX®
, GOTS
, BLUESIGN®
). Also, use the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation’s labels. It takes time to change habits, but becoming aware is a good start. So, by thinking about how we consume clothes and fabric, we all can make a big difference and become environmental heroes!
We hope you want to be with us and make a difference in our environment!
Happy New Year!
