Canvas is a strong and durable coarse-stranded fabric in a twill weave. Its noticeable texture gives it its characteristic appearance.
Due to its dense weave and surface structure, cotton canvas has a certain level of natural water repellency. This makes it useful for outdoor use and is used to make sails, tents, awnings, shoes, and other products where these properties are desired.
Originally made from hemp, canvas is now usually made from cotton, but the textile can also be made from flax, jute, and synthetic fibres.
Other names for canvas include sailcloth, painter’s canvas, and artist’s canvas, which we name according to their various uses.
