Factories come and go while the earth they stand on remains [1].
Did you know that a kilo of raw cotton costs about SEK 18, which the buyer pays the grower? The grower gets his money, which may seem low, but since the regulations for controls are scarce, there are few overheads, which keep the price down—no rules control which chemicals they use or how effective the irrigation system is.
Did you know that a kilo of organic cotton costs about twice as much, around €35 per kilo? So, to grow under more controlled conditions, they double the price. A quantity sufficient for 5-6 T-shirts or 1.5 pairs of jeans. What conscious choices are we able to make when we know the circumstances?
As consumers, we do have a choice. To be conscious of our spending, we should buy sustainably. It is better to buy what has already been made, like vintage or second-hand. If we still want something new, choose sustainable – organically produced products.
