Evergreen means ‘always green’ and refers to plants that retain their leaves or needles all year round. The leaves remain for several years and are replaced gradually. Examples of evergreen plants include spruce and pine.
Evergreen plants are often confused with winter-green plants, but the latter usually shed their leaves in spring as new ones grow. Both types therefore have green leaves or needles in winter, but the leaves of winter-green plants are not adapted to survive for several years. Examples of winter-green plants include lingonberries and Christmas roses.
