Annuals are plants that grow, bloom and produce seeds within a single year. When they wither, life remains in the seed, ready for the next season. Most commonly, the plant germinates in spring and produces seeds in autumn of the same year. Winter annuals, however, germinate in autumn instead, overwinter and bloom early the following spring.
Poppies, sunflowers, tomatoes and many herbs are examples of annuals. Hemp and flax are also annual plants.
