The Species Name – Scientific Name – Binomen
To recognise species in science, we use Latin names called binomen.
These Latin names have two main functions: identifying a species and indicating its relationships with other organisms.
The first half is a genus name that links an organism to its closest relatives, while the second species name implies its uniqueness. An example is the species name “Boletus edulis,” where Boletus indicates the genus of noble mushrooms and “edulis” is the species-specific name for the standard Penny Bun.
