We do not support Black Friday. Here you get concrete alternatives to the shopping hysteria.
Today is Black Friday. Black Friday happens the day after American Thanksgiving Day, the fourth Thursday in November, sometimes from midnight on this family celebration evening. This year it is November 26, 2021, the same day most people get their salary before Christmas.
Time to Rethink!
Emissions of greenhouse gases from global textile production are more than the total emissions of all air traffic and traffic at sea.
The future way to consume clothes:
Use what you have and experience things: Sure, it’s tempting with a 70% discount, but do you really need another sweater? We do not use 1/3 of our clothes.
Take care of what you have:
- Only wash your clothes if needed; you can remove a small stain by hand.
- Tumble dry as little as possible as tumble drying wear and tear both fabric and paint.
- Follow the washing instructions, and wash at 40 degrees instead of 60. It almost halves energy use.
Repair and sew your clothes:
- Repair what needs to be repaired.
- Sew on something new if you can.
- If you need help fixing or sewing, ask someone or consider handing in your clothes to a tailor.
Borrow and rent: If you are going to a party and do not have something suitable to wear, try to borrow from your friend. Many special garments are available for rent.
Swap: Your friend’s sweater might be just the new garment you want and vice versa.
Buy used: Everything is better than producing new. Take a look at thrift stores. This year’s Christmas present – the recycled garment. Every small behaviour change can make a big difference for us and our planet.
Buy new: This should be your last resort. Twenty-four full bathtubs with water are required to produce a single t-shirt. If you still shop today – try to buy organic or eco-labelled clothes.
Have a fabulous Friday!
