Most ascomycetes and basidiomycetes reproduce sexually by meeting the hyphae and forming a fruiting body. The fruiting body then produces spores that spread and establish themselves. The common puffball, for example, develops its spores inside the fruiting body and spreads them in a cloud when an animal or human steps on them.
