Tyg till Tyg/Fabric to Fabric is an initiative that drives the issue of textile recycling. Together Linköping University, Luleå University of Technology, and automation companies such as Industrigallerian and others conduct research and development of mechanical recycling of textile fibres.
Fabric to Fabric started the work on recycling textiles by developing a design method for closed textile material cycles. In collaboration, the University of Borås and Mid Sweden University Östersund carried out this work. This work led to discovering the limit to recycling fabrics mixed with accessories and synthetic threads. There is no technology for recycling these fabrics. As a result, new initiatives took place to drive the textile recycling issue. “Tyg tilt Tyg” established contacts between The Royal Institute of Technology and companies in chemical recycling in Sweden and England.
There are solutions for recycling textiles chemically, but the challenges of reaching the industrial level are significant. As the initiatives are relatively numerous in chemical recycling, today’s centre of attention is mechanical recycling.
