Jacquard is a weaving technique that can create complex patterns by raising and lowering the warp threads individually. This is done using mechanical punch cards or by controlling a computer that stores instructions on how to create the pattern. One of many colours can be used on the threads, providing a wide variety of possible patterns.
Joseph-Marie Jacquard was the French man who invented the Jacquard fabric, and the automatic Jacquard loom with punch cards in the early 19th century.
Damask and brocade are variants of jacquard fabric.
